[Remote] Senior Accountant
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Nortia Staffing is a company specializing in Human Resources, Accounting, and Administrative Staffing. They are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join a medium-sized non-profit in the San Francisco Bay Area, focusing on maintaining accurate financial records and supporting month-end and year-end close activities while ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards.
Responsibilities
- Reconcile general ledger accounts and ensure transactions are accurate, complete, and properly supported
- Support month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, and account reclassifications
- Maintain fixed asset schedules and process depreciation and prepaid expense amortization entries
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Document and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Serve as a key contributor during the annual audit by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation
- Assist with data collection and preparation for IRS Form 990 and related tax filings
- Manage the distribution and filing of 1099 forms and respond to vendor inquiries
- Support implementation of audit recommendations and continuous improvement initiatives
- Review and process employee expense reports, ensuring compliance with company policies and accurate coding
- Reconcile credit card transactions and statements
- Administer the company credit card program and serve as the primary point of contact for related questions
- Develop training materials and provide onboarding and ongoing education regarding expense reimbursement procedures
- Identify and implement opportunities to streamline accounting processes and improve efficiency
- Provide backup support for other accounting functions as needed
- Assist finance leadership with special projects and strategic initiatives
- Collaborate effectively with Finance, Operations, Programs, and other cross-functional teams
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and collaborative team culture
Skills
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years within a nonprofit organization
- Strong experience with general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting
- Solid understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial analysis
- Experience working with cloud-based accounting and financial systems
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and meet deadlines in a remote environment
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA designation or active progress toward CPA certification
- Experience with Sage Intacct, Concur, Salesforce, or similar cloud-based platforms
- Experience supporting audits and nonprofit tax filings
