Under the supervision of a teacher/administrator, assists in the direct delivery of instruction in a classroom setting. The primary objective of such assistance is to affect learning for mastery by implementing both developmental and remedial methods in basic skill areas and content areas. The employee assists certificated staff by implementing lesson plans (activities which include reviewing and correcting the work of pupils), participating in parent conferences, proctoring examinations, keeping relevant records, operating instructional equipment in appropriate instructional settings, as well as performing related duties as required. Some positions may require conversational and written skills in a specific language(s) other than English related to the needs of the assignment. An ability to translate and adapt materials to and from English into that language(s) may also be required. Some positions may require that the employee furnish a certificate of clearance from the Department of Motor Vehicles to meet District insurability. Essential Duties The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list. As the Early Childhood Education Substitute Paraeducator, you will:

  • Assists in planning lessons and preparing instructional materials.
  • Supervises and/or tutors individuals or small groups of pupils in specific skill and/or content areas. Conducts planned lessons with assigned groups in the classroom or other assigned educational location.
  • Assists in explaining subject matter to pupils. Administers tests and examinations, and reviews, corrects and re-reviews assignments. Maintains individual pupil profiles and/or portfolios.
  • Prepares, operates, and maintains instructional equipment and supplies such as audiovisual equipment, computers, laboratory equipment, and other teaching machines. May also procure and store such equipment. Issues various supplies and equipment to pupils. Maintains necessary records pertaining to instructional equipment and supplies.
  • Assists in maintaining classroom discipline to provide a positive learning environment. Enforces classroom and school rules. Assists in behavior management and discipline among pupils on field trips and at school site activities.
  • May assist other designated school staff in monitoring halls, locker areas, cafeteria, yard, auditorium, gymnasium, lavatories, and other areas of the site in accordance with program regulations.
  • Renders first aid in compliance with modern precautionary methods. Reports disciplinary problems and injury incidents to the proper supervisor.
  • May assist the professional staff in publicizing educational development programs by issuing information, objectives, and functions of the program.
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and GSuite (Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms)

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Utilizes knowledge appropriately to satisfy the employee who works with children’s center pupils under the direct supervision of a classroom teacher.
  • Duties focus on implementing the core curriculum for the basic skill areas appropriate to the child development program. Examples of which may include familiarity with teaching methods, instructional media, test scoring, school organization, and school rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrates competency in performing the following tasks: working with children, acting quickly and effectively in emergencies, working with and relating to all individuals within the culturally diverse environment of SFUSD, and developing and maintaining effective, courteous communications with pupils, staff and public.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma OR its equivalent
  • Six (6) Units of Early Childhood Education
  • Pass a Medical Examination
