Temple Law Library seeks a Metadata Librarian to join our experienced, dedicated staff in providing a high level of services to the Law School, the University, the Philadelphia legal community, and the public. The Metadata Librarian manages descriptive practices to enhance collection discovery and support research and learning at Temple University Beasley School of Law Library. Reporting to the Head of Collections & Assessment Librarian, the Metadata Librarian will oversee the creation, quality control, and maintenance of cataloging and metadata records in the library management system and the Law Library’s and Temple University Libraries’ discovery systems. The Metadata Librarian will create original and complex adaptive bibliographic records for library resources in multiple formats, overseeing and performing physical processing tasks, creating and updating local documentation related to cataloging and database maintenance, and participating in Law Library activities, in projects, on committees, and on working groups. They will also handle batch processing, authority control, holdings maintenance, relations with external vendors, and the creation and export of MARC or other metadata to other systems or utilities. Their management of technical services student workers includes hiring, training, and supervision. The Metadata Librarian is expected to seek out, test, and recommend new tools or processes for managing bibliographic metadata and associated workflows. This librarian works with other departments and campus libraries to coordinate workflows and implement standards in the library management system and related external systems. Professional development is highly encouraged and may include service on Law School, University Libraries, and University committees, as well as involvement in library professional associations. Performs other duties as assigned. This position is assigned a hybrid work arrangement (on-campus and remote), the duration of this hybrid work arrangement is at the discretion of Temple University and the Department. Required Education & Experience: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library science or equivalent degree. Cataloging or metadata management experience. Experience with OCLC bibliographic utilities. Required Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of, or an aptitude for learning, cataloging content standards (e.g., RDA guidelines, AACR2), structural standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MARC, MODS, RDA Elements Sets), value standards (e.g., LCC, RDA Value), and data encoding (e.g., MARC, XML). Demonstrated understanding of current issues and emerging developments within the national cataloging environment, in particular, and within librarianship, in general. Familiarity with principles of authority control. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and within a collaborative team environment. Excellent problem-solving, organization, and time management skills. Proficiency in or an aptitude for learning office, research, teaching, communication, and library technology systems and applications. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Preferred: Two or more years of cataloging experience. Knowledge, experience, or interest in archives administration, planning, policies, and processing. Training or experience in scripting or other database management automation or crosswalks (e.g., MarcEdit). Experience in batch processing MARC records, including batch loading and batch editing. Knowledge, experience, or interest in electronic resource management. Knowledge, experience, or interest in library acquisitions. Experience in a law library, academic library, and/or knowledge of United States legal resources. Knowledge, experience, or interest in cataloging and handling practices for pre-1900 print materials. Experience with the Ex Libris Alma library management system. Knowledge, experience, or interest in digital repository management. Experience in creating documentation and training materials. Knowledge of one or more languages other than English.
