Hiring Unit: Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE) Course code and title: EDSL 500. Foundations and Issues in Second Language Teaching and Learning Description: Introduction to various theories and methodological approaches to second language teaching from the perspective of contributing disciplines (e.g., linguistics, psychology, sociology and education). Overview of theory and research in second language acquisition, including factors affecting how second languages are learned, with applications in classroom contexts. This course is not Team taught. This course is offered online. Term: Fall 2026 Credits: 3 credits Location: Online Schedule: Online Asynchronous Teaching Qualification Requirements (TQRs): Education: 1. Graduate degree (PhD preferred) in relevant fields (e.g., second language education, applied linguistics, TESL/TEFL, sociolinguistics, or related interdisciplinary fields). 2. Strong grounding in second language acquisition, second language teaching methodologies, and contemporary issues in second language education. Experience: 1. Expert knowledge of: Major theories and research in second language acquisition, including factors affecting how second languages are learned. Contributing disciplinary perspectives in second language education, including linguistics, psychology, sociology, and education. Historical and contemporary methodological approaches to second language teaching. Cognitive, social, affective, and contextual factors shaping second language learning and teaching. Applications of second language acquisition theory and research to classroom contexts. Core concepts and terminology in second language education. Research-informed approaches to connecting theory, methodology, and classroom practice in second language education. The Québec Education Program (QEP) and professional competency frameworks relevant to teacher education. 2. Experience designing, developing, and teaching online courses. 3. Experience teaching or facilitating learning in second language education and/or teacher education contexts. 4. Experience engaging students in connecting theory, research, and classroom practice through discussion-based, inquiry-based, or collaborative learning. 5. Experience facilitating seminar-style learning environments that support critical reflection and dialogue. 6. Experience teaching ESL in Quebec elementary and/or secondary French school system. Other 1. Instruction in this course may be delivered remotely if indicated as required by the university. 2. Knowledge of the impact and experience integrating pedagogical approaches anchored to equity, diversity and inclusion. 3. Familiarity using myCourses, Zoom and/or other similar online platforms to facilitate quality teaching and learning experiences. 4. Familiarity with the application of a variety of digital teaching and learning tools. 5. Familiarity teaching blended classes.
