Overview

Help care for the natural spaces that make Missoula special. As a Conservation Lands Attendant , you’ll support the maintenance and restoration of native habitats, trails, and recreational infrastructure across the City’s conservation lands. From managing invasive species to maintaining trail systems and supporting restoration efforts, this role plays an important part in preserving the health, accessibility, and beauty of Missoula’s outdoor spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Implement restoration of native plant communities and wildlife habitats on conservation lands, including plant material collection, greenhouse work, seeding, planting, and site maintenance.
  • Implement invasive plant species control using chemical and mechanical methods (herbicide application, hand pulling, cutting, chipping, etc.).
  • Maintain recreational infrastructure and trails on conservation lands, using various light equipment, vehicles, and hand tools.
  • Maintain vegetation, signage, and infrastructure associated with conservation lands trails and Trailheads.
  • Perform light forestry work to improve health and control woody invasive species and maintain appropriate clearance along trail corridors.
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of small equipment and tools.
  • Assist with greenhouse plant propagation and invasive species control using chemical and mechanical methods.
  • Collect native plant materials and maintain planting and restoration efforts in the greenhouse and fields.
  • Perform light forestry restoration to improve health of woody invasive species.
  • Provide maintenance of prior restoration planting projects and sites, such as watering and weeding.
  • Execute other duties as assigned, based on training and qualifications.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Any combination of training and experience in construction, landscaping, facility maintenance, or other relevant fields.
  • Must be of legal age to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must have a valid Montana driver’s license with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire. (Valid out’of’state driver’s license are acceptable for students)
  • Knowledge of construction and maintenance principles, equipment, materials and techniques.
  • Knowledge of turf, tree planting, plant propagation, and general landscaping maintenance.
  • Understanding of safety policies, OSHA guidelines and risk management.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions with minimum supervision.
  • Proficiency in computer software such as Microsoft 365 and social media; ability to learn job’specific applications.
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written; ability to work with diverse individuals.
  • Ability to create educational materials, publications, and reports.
  • Capability to lead tours and volunteer events.
  • Ability to operate small power equipment, hand tools, and light equipment safely.
  • Ability to learn city policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Missoula’s open space, parks, urban forestry systems;

Montana native plants, invasive weeds, and animals; athletic field and court regulations. Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs or less.
  • Perform duties under conditions of noise, heat, dampness or cold.
  • Exposure to uneven and steep terrain, occupational hazards, biohazards, and physical risks requiring safety precautions.
