If you're a specialist with expertise in information security technologies, intrusion detection, assessment tools, encryption, and application development, then we've got the perfect opportunity for you. We are looking for a Senior Cyber Security Engineer at the Governor's Office of Information Technology for the State of Colorado. In this role, you will be a subject matter expert, spearheading the design, building, and maintenance of our Security Operations Center tool sets. But that's not all. You'll be a key player in coordinating across domains to execute our security strategy, while analyzing its effectiveness. Your ability to evaluate risks and communicate them in a clear, objective manner will be crucial in ensuring our operational continuity. So, if you have practical experience with information systems and a strong understanding of network, application, and hardware platform security best practices, we'd love to hear from you. Let's work together to keep our systems secure, supporting the critical work of OIT. Some of your important responsibilities will include:

  • Design new tools and controls and apply them to major known threats.
  • Ensure IT environment domains are secure.
  • Address any issues, events, incidents, vulnerabilities, or weaknesses.
  • Work with vendors and partners to develop and manage information security programs.
  • Guide the team in maintaining and assessing operational requirements and service issues for improvement opportunities. Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights A wide salary range is posted for this position and any job offer is based upon a salary analysis to comply with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. The salary analysis considers relevant experience, education, certifications, and state seniority as compared to others doing substantially similar work. While all offers are compliant with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, there is no guarantee an offer will be at the top of the posted range based on the salary analysis. This is a skills-based job announcement. The required minimum qualifications and/or education (if substituting for the proven experience, knowledge, and skills), are as follows: Minimum Qualifications:
  • Seven (7) years of increasingly challenging work experience in the information technology field.
  • Operational knowledge of:
  • Information technologies such as servers, networks, and/or application development.
  • Information systems industry and best practices in network, application, and hardware platform security.
  • Security program policies, processes, standards, requirements, procedures, and various supporting security technologies. Substitutions:
  • Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis, but cannot completely substitute for these qualifications.
  • Training or Certification related to the work assigned to the position will be assigned credit towards substitution for experience and/or education, but cannot completely substitute for these qualifications. Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in an information security position or have obtained information security certifications.
  • Comfortable in a "hands on" role, driving security operations work to completion, and working closely with the technical leads to monitor the progress of assigned work.
  • Capable of deploying an information technology service from beginning to end.
  • Experience in architecting and optimizing enterprise logging platforms and Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems for proactive threat detection.
  • Proven track record in deploying and managing Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solutions to secure complex server and workstation environments.
  • Knowledge of designing and implementing Data Loss Prevention (DLP) programs, including data classification and technical controls for data-at-rest and data-in-motion.
  • Proficiency in using scripting or orchestration tools (SOAR) to integrate disparate security technologies and automate operational workflows. Conditions of Employment: OIT employees must comply with any screening procedures in place at state entity locations where they might be required to perform work. A pre-employment background check will be conducted as part of the selection process. Positions supporting some agencies such as the Department of Corrections and the Department of Public Safety will also require a pre-employment drug test. This position may require travel within the specified geographic area, and to locations across the state as needed. Supplemental Information If this posting indicates “remote from anywhere in CO” in the title, periodic reporting to the primary state work location designated for the position is required. All remote work must be performed in Colorado. While candidates from out of state will be considered for this role, the candidate selected for the position must relocate and reside in Colorado on the first day of their new position. A reasonable timeframe for relocation will be established on an individual basis, while considering business needs, and determining a start date.
