Job Summary The Office of K-12 Partnerships is collaborating with Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools to bring the Math Corps summer program to the UM-Flint campus. The Wayne State University Math Corps was established in 1992 as a combined mathematics enrichment and mentoring program for Detroit public school students. For over thirty years, the Math Corps has been working to provide children with the kinds of educational and lifetime opportunities that all kids deserve. UM-Flint's Math Corps program will be held July 13

  • August 6, Monday-Thursday, with additional training sessions, orientation, and closing ceremonies after the program.

UM-Flint is hiring (4) student College Instructors (CIs) to help staff the program. College Instructors (CIs) are current college students who provide leadership for a team of 10 middle school students and 5 high school teaching assistants (TAs). CI's are responsible for: participating in all pre

  • and post-camp activities; attending each regularly scheduled program day including staff debriefing; supervising and monitoring their students academically, planning and facilitating team time activities including individualized lesson plans and team-wide games; managing behavior; observing, guiding, and managing TAs interaction with students; teaching and tutoring students; maintaining a safe, positive and encouraging learning environment; and most importantly, serving as big brothers and sisters to both middle and high school students.

Responsibilities

  • College Instructors (CIs) are expected to: Attend the following: pre
  • and post
  • program meetings as needed; CI training; teacher assistant (TA) training; orientation; each regularly scheduled program day from 8:55 am
  • 4:30 pm; and the closing ceremony.

Conduct morning meetings with the TAs. Facilitate and supervise team time. Actively observe and manage students and TAs during the morning assembly while encouraging them to participate. Correct the homework daily in accordance with the Math Corps guidelines. Correct quizzes on Thursdays and turn them in to the Site Coordinator before leaving. Keep accurate attendance and homework records in a grade book provided by Math Corps. Fill out the end-of-the-day report and return it to the Grade Supervisor Escort students to and from lunch Observe and help manage students at lunch, including family meal days and the picnic Escort students to Discovery classes and Afternoon Activities Communicate and discuss any missing or unsatisfactory homework, poor quizzes, or other academic matters with your Grade Supervisor Communicate any discipline issues to the Grade Supervisors and Dean. Any acts of violence or bullying should be reported immediately. Actively participate in staff debriefing Observe and help manage students during afternoon activities Supervise students during journal time Individualize, decorate, and prepare the classroom to be an inviting space Conduct themselves as a positive role model for their students, TAs and fellow staff members Any other duties assigned by the Dean, Director, or Program Coordinator Serve to inspire!

Required Qualifications

  • Current college student Strong interpersonal skills Reliable transportation Fluency with spoken English Must attend mandatory training in mid-June at Wayne State University (transportation provided) and meet reliability expectations for the duration of the summer program Desired Qualifications
  • Current UM-Flint student studying a math or math-related field Modes of Work Onsite The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.
