PT Remote Paralegal (25 hrs/week)

Work from home Full-time role Hiring

Paralegal — Remote (Part-Time, 25 hrs weekly) Horton Legal Strategies PLLC is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, and self-directed Paralegal to provide substantive legal support to the attorneys of a multi-state business law firm that focuses on mergers & acquisitions, corporate law, and intellectual property law, with some employment law and litigation matters for business clients. All candidates must have competency in corporate or M&A matters, plus additional experience in either litigation, employment law, or intellectual property law (trademarks). This is a part-time, fully remote position focused on substantive legal work — not administrative tasks. The principal attorney is supported by a full-time executive assistant, and client administration is handled by a full-time case manager. The ideal candidate is a focused, self-directed executor who can take an assignment, deliver it cleanly, and move to the next without needing constant check-ins or external structure. We are looking for someone who values uninterrupted work time and produces consistent output in a quiet, asynchronous environment. All candidates will complete a 2-week paid trial period to confirm mutual fit and demonstrate capabilities before a continuing engagement is extended. We anticipate hiring up to two paralegals from this pool. This position is designed as a remote role; candidates local to the Firm's New Jersey office may be eligible for in-office accommodations for part of the week. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship for this role. A cover letter is not required; however, feel free to include a sentence or two in your e-mail explaining why you are interested in the role and the specific practice areas you feel suited to support on a substantive basis. Please note the timeline further below. Deviations are not available for this recruiting cycle. Core Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research using standard research tools like Lexis, Lexis Protégé, and Practical Law, and using alternate legal research methods such as Claude.
  • Conduct fact research using tools relevant to the practice areas supported, such as secretary of state websites, EDGAR, USPTO TSDR, PACER and other court e-filing services, and others.
  • Draft research memos, contracts, pleadings, correspondence (letters and e-mails), and other legal documents under attorney supervision.
  • Meet virtually with clients to discuss matter developments and other relevant items. Communicate and coordinate via phone, e-mail, mail, e-filing, and videoconference as needed with attorneys, clients, third parties, and vendors.
  • Draft and send meeting summaries to clients, and enter relevant follow-up tasks in case management software.
  • Track matter deadlines using the firm's case management system, manage internal deadlines that support timely completion of external deadlines, and proactively coordinate with attorneys, clients, case managers, and (where applicable) a second paralegal to ensure timely completion and clean handoffs.
  • Maintain accurate client files in coordination with case manager.

Practice-Specific Responsibilities All Candidates: Support corporate, commercial, and M&A transactions, including due diligence organization, disclosure schedules, document preparation, and closing coordination. Duties also include drafting corporate governance documents, resolutions, and consents; managing annual corporate compliance filings in coordination with case manager; and researching corporate governance points of law. Trademark Candidates: duties include confirming deadlines in coordination with supervising attorney and calendaring deadlines, drafting applications using Trademark Center, researching responses to office action letters, monitoring and analyzing potentially infringing conduct, and research in support of adversarial and ex parte proceedings. Litigation Candidates: duties include drafting pleadings, discovery requests, briefs/memoranda of law, motions, e-filing, coordination of service of process, and discovery management. Employment Law Candidates: duties include analyzing employer compliance requirements, drafting severance and employment agreements, and research on employment laws and regulations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or Paralegal Certification from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years of substantive paralegal experience in a law firm setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in corporate governance and M&A matters (all candidates).
  • Demonstrated experience in at least one of the following, including standard software tools for related work: litigation, trademarks, commercial transactions (non-M&A), or employment law.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and document drafting skills.
  • Proficiency with Lexis or similar legal research platform, automated template software, Microsoft Office 365 and included products, standard case management software (we use Lawcus), digital file management (we use SharePoint), and LLM and AI-assisted legal research tools (e.g., Claude).
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage competing deadlines.
  • Proven ability to maintain focus and output in a remote environment.
  • Reliable remote work setup, including stable high-speed internet and a quiet, professional workspace for client videoconferences.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, ethical standards, and professionalism.
  • Ability to meet a billable hours target of 80% of work time and a recoverable billables KPI of 75% of work time (i.e., billed time that is invoiced and collected without write-down).
