About the position About the National Academy of Medicine The National Academy of Medicine (NAM), established in 1970 under the name Institute of Medicine (IOM), is an independent organization of eminent professionals from diverse fields including health and medicine; the natural, social, and behavioral sciences; and beyond. With the authority of the 1863 Congressional Charter of the National Academy of Sciences requested and signed by President Abraham Lincoln, the NAM serves alongside the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering as adviser to the nation and the international community. The NAM’s mission is to advance science, inform policy, and catalyze action to achieve human health, equity, and well-being. About the Program The NAM Leadership Consortium (LC) Collaboration for a Learning Health System provides a trusted neutral venue for national leaders in health, health care, and biomedical science to work collaboratively toward their common commitment to a health system that rewards effectiveness, affordability, equity, and continuous learning. The LC is seeking a summer intern to help support projects and research on pressing health and health care issues. This person will have completed a Bachelor’s program, and possess a keen sense of strategic decision-making, excellent interpersonal skills, exceptional writing abilities, a strong comfort level working in a fast-paced collaborative environment, and familiarity with compelling issues in health and health science, care, programs, and policies. The summer intern will work closely with staff within the Leadership Consortium and focus on one or more of the following portfolios:

  • Evidence & Data Action Collaborative (EDAC): Accelerate continuous learning and improvement through the timely generation and application of reliable evidence and validated technologies to advance health data as a core utility – a virtual health data trust.
  • Digital Health & AI Action Collaborative (DHAC): Promote digital tools and architecture innovation for seamless connectivity and learning, including accelerating the responsible development and application of AI and other emerging technologies for transformed health, health care, and biomedical science.
  • Value Incentives & Systems Action Collaborative (VISAC): Advance funding and accountability focused on individual, family, and community health & well-being outcomes.
  • Trust & Engagement Action Collaborative (TEAC): Advance trust and engagement with individuals, families, and communities on the goals that matter most for them. About the Position Under the direction of a Program Officer or Senior Program Officer, the college student hire will perform a variety of tasks that focus on providing learning opportunities and exposure to a wide range of activities. The candidate may perform a variety of clerical and research duties as well as help with special projects. This job is intended for students pursuing Masters/advanced-level education opportunities with an interest in artificial intelligence, health system performance measurement, and/or performance-based payment to increase their knowledge and obtain on-the-job training and experience. Under direct supervision or clearly defined procedures, performs a variety of clerical and research duties and accomplishes routine tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Administrative: Performs administrative tasks. Creates and maintains databases and files. Assists with meeting preparation as needed.
  • Writing and Editing: Drafts, proofreads, and copyedits documents.
  • Research Activities: Performs subject-oriented literature searches. Gathers references. May participate in other research efforts including collection, assembly, and the tabulation of data and summarizing literature. May assist in analyzing basic research results.
  • Academic/Career Development: Undertakes one or more short-term projects designed to assist with enhancing ongoing study projects.
  • Related duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to solve problems with supervisory consultation or by following procedures.
  • Ability to prioritize work and the flexibility to change directions as the job dictates.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
  • Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies' departments through effective communication.
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills with an ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent knowledge.
  • Current enrollment in a graduate degree college or university program.
  • None.
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
