School Summary South Carolina Connections Academy (SCCA) is a tuition-free, K–12 online public school serving students anywhere in South Carolina. SCCA is authorized under state law by the South Carolina Public Charter School District and governed by an independent Board of Directors. The school is operated by South Carolina Connections Academy Charter School, a nonprofit corporation, through a contract with Connections Academy, LLC, to provide its educational program and other services. Launched in 2008, SCCA is South Carolina’s first virtual charter school. Connections Academy, a division of Connections Education, is accredited by AdvancED, and SCCA is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. Position Summary and Responsibilities Working from your home or from Columbia, South Carolina the Special Education Teacher will manage instructional programs for students with special needs. Through use of the telephone, Internet and various curriculum tools they will consult regularly with learning coaches and students to ensure that each child successfully completes their instructional program. The Special Education Teacher will participate in all steps of the IEP process. They will work closely with the special education and general education staff to ensure that the school’s special education program is successful and operating in compliance with federal and state regulations. The Special Education Teacher will utilize technology to deliver virtual instruction. The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for the successful completion of the following tasks:

  • Manage and provide instructional guidance, virtual teaching and general strategies for a caseload of students
  • Develop, write and implement Individualized Education Plans
  • Progress monitor IEP goals, complete quarterly IEP progress reports
  • Schedule and conduct annual, reevaluation, and special review IEP meetings
  • Communicate regularly with parents/learning coaches of students with special needs to insure that student IEP goals are being met, and that their needs are addressed in a timely and appropriate fashion
  • Consult with teachers and coordinate the implementation of specially designed instruction as defined in the IEP regarding students with specific needs
  • Provide direct and indirect services to students including services delivered through web-conferencing software, as needed;
  • Help teachers and learning coaches develop and implement program accommodations and modifications
  • Organize and adhere to all special education procedures and compliance deadlines as directed by IDEA, SCCA, and the authorizing district
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date data in the school’s Learning Management System and Enrich.
  • Assist with administering state testing for all state assessments in grades K-12
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Degree in Special Education
  • Valid Special Education credential in South Carolina
  • Low-incidence or Self-contained teaching experience is preferred
  • Strong technology skills (especially with Microsoft Office products)
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Student and family focused approach
  • High degree of flexibility
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in fast paced environment
  • Team player track record
  • Willingness to travel for school-based event and state testing (may require occasional overnight travel)
  • Must be able to use a personal electronic device and an email address for two-step authentication
