VP - Head Of Reserving & Appointed Actuary About the role: We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic VP, Head of Reserving & Appointed Actuary to lead and modernize the reserving function. This role is responsible for setting the enterprise reserving vision, ensuring reserve adequacy and transparency, and positioning reserving as a key pillar of financial strength and risk management. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in P&C reserving, particularly in personal lines, combined with a proven ability to lead high-performing teams and evolve traditional reserving practices into a forward-looking, data-driven, and insight-led function. This individual will operate as a senior leader, influencing business strategy and providing critical perspective on financial results, capital, and risk. Compensation $225,000 – $300,000 base salary + bonus + 401(k) match + comprehensive benefits
Work Environment
This is a remote role with the expectation of periodic in-person collaboration. Candidates must be based near New York, Boston, Chicago, or Charleston to support occasional office attendance and leadership meetings. What you'll do: Strategic Leadership
- Define and execute the enterprise reserving strategy, aligned with financial objectives, capital management, and risk appetite
- Lead, develop, and scale a high-performing reserving team, building strong technical depth and leadership capability
- Act as a key advisor to senior leadership, translating reserve insights into clear, actionable business recommendations
Reserving & Financial Oversight
- Lead the quarterly and annual reserving process, including setting best estimate reserves and recommending booking positions
- Oversee reserving methodologies, assumptions, and analyses across all lines of business
- Ensure reserve adequacy, consistency, and transparency, with clear articulation of key drivers and uncertainties
- Partner closely with Finance on financial close, earnings, and reserve-related disclosures
Appointed Actuary Responsibilities
- Serve as the Appointed Actuary, signing Statements of Actuarial Opinion (SAO) and producing Actuarial Reports
- Ensure full compliance with actuarial standards of practice (ASOPs) and regulatory requirements
- Maintain strong relationships with regulators, auditors, and external stakeholders
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Collaborate with Claims leadership to incorporate operational trends and changes into reserve estimates
- Partner with Pricing and Underwriting to ensure alignment between pricing assumptions, loss trends, and reserve outcomes
- Support enterprise risk management, capital modeling, and reinsurance strategy
Modernization & Innovation
- Lead the modernization of the reserving function, including tools, data, and operating model
- Introduce advanced analytics and improved monitoring to enhance reserve insights and responsiveness
- Establish scalable, efficient reserving processes and promote a culture of continuous improvement
What we're looking for: Experience & Expertise
- FCAS and MAAA required
- 10+ years in P&C actuarial roles, with significant reserving experience
- Prior experience serving as, or directly supporting, an Appointed Actuary preferred
- Strong expertise in reserving methodologies, including loss development, Bornhuetter-Ferguson, and stochastic techniques
- Deep understanding of regulatory requirements and actuarial standards
Leadership & Business Acumen
- Proven ability to build and lead high-performing teams
- Strategic and commercially aware, with strong stakeholder engagement skills
- Experience influencing senior leadership and board-level discussions
- Demonstrated ability to drive change and enhance actuarial processes
Technical & Analytical Skills
- Strong actuarial reserving expertise with the ability to interpret complex data and emerging trends
- Experience with modern data environments and actuarial tools
- Proficiency in Python and/or R preferred
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, or related field
- Experience across multiple personal lines products (e.g., homeowners, auto, umbrella)
- Exposure to capital modeling, reinsurance, or enterprise risk management
